IMRT
Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) requires the use of sophisticated computer technology to map the precise dimensions and density of cancerous tumors, perform virtual treatment simulations and then conform both the shape and intensity of the radiation dose to those exact parameters. IMRT enables us to further escalate radiation doses to cancerous regions by administering more than 100 beams to the treatment field, resulting in maximum radiation coverage of even difficult-to-treat tumors and potentially higher cure rates. In addition, retreatment is feasible when necessary because healthy tissue and organs can receive less radiation than with conventional therapy allowing those areas to rebound more quickly.
IMRT is typically applied to cancer of the brain, eye and orbit, head and neck and prostate; however, Allegheny General is currently developing IMRT programs for the treatment of the breast, gastrointestinal tract, gynecologic system, lungs and spine.
